Thank you Volunteers!
Last Saturday’s official Opening Day 2015 was a fun day of trips to and from Hallet’s Cove. In between we ran a day of community sponsored kayaking at the cove. At the end of the day volunteers enjoyed a tasty Mediterranean Grill by Chef Bob Hartling! It was exciting to meet volunteers from the fledgling Stuyvesant Cove Boathouse. They volunteered with us as one step in many that will eventually lead to a functioning boathouse on Manhattan’s East Side! On Sunday, LICCB volunteers were treated to morning paddles and an afternoon Luau at Sebago Canoe Club. Volunteers met members from clubs all over NY and Yonkers while enjoying a feast. Another contingent of LICCB volunteers helped out at Hoboken Kayak Club and pitched in with Kayak Staten Island at Fresh Kills Discovery Day.

Volunteer Tips
Veteran Volunteer Barbara says:
“I volunteer with many different organizations, and I feel that the most important reason for volunteering is a desire to share the pleasure I feel about the activity with members of the public. I think, what can I do to make your experience special? What is most appealing about the activity? When I work the waiver table at a walk-up paddle, I take the time to connect with the prospective paddlers–asking if they’ve kayaked before, calming nervous people by talking about the stability of Ocean kayaks, offering the central paddling tip of “keeping your nose in the middle of the boat”–so by the time they reach the beach, they are ready to enjoy this new experience. Take an extra moment when you volunteer to connect with our walk-up kayakers–it will improve both their experience and yours.”
