Popolopen/Peekskill Festival and Fireworks Trip Saturday 8/6/11

POPOLOPEN/PEEKSKILL FESTIVAL & FIREWORKS TRIP A spectacular day, not to be missed! Peekskill's Annual Festival occurs August 6th & 7th with fireworks on the night of Saturday, the 6th. Don’t go near the water…

In an awful deja vu feeling we share this NYTimes story about the disaster at the North River Treatment Plant.  The fire and subsequent shutdown has resulted in millions and millions of gallons of untreated wastewater falling directly into the Hudson and Harlem rivers. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/22/nyregion/sewage-spill-renders-new-york-harbor-unfit.html?_r=1&hp 40 years ago it was standard practice to dump untreated wasted directly into the waterways.  Money from the Clean Water Act made possible the treatment of raw sewage and led to waterways suitable for recreation, such as human-powered boating. Weekend Programming canceled 7/22-23-24, 2011

Due to potentially dangerous levels of bacteria in the water from raw sewage dumping into the Hudson River as a result of a treatment plant fire taking the plant offline, area boat houses--including the LICCB--are canceling programming for the weekend. The plant located on the Hudson River between 135th and 149th Street remains offline at this time while repairs are made.  Some untreated sewage is being diverted to other plants through emergency sewer work, but levels of bacteria are high enough for the DEP to advise complete avoidance of any contact which carries the risk of ingestion of the water, including [...]

Add Your Voice to Newtown Creek Boathouse project bumps

Waterways Recreation Enthusiasts, As you may have read on these pages and elsewhere, there is an exciting development underway in Greenpoint Brooklyn.  The North Brooklyn Boat Club has been awarded several million dollars out of a penalty fund assessed to a large polluter of the Newtown Creek and the Greenpoint area, to develop a boathouse project at the foot of Manhattan Avenue. The project is encountering roadblocks, which is inevitable. Head’s Up–Sewage in the Hudson from Treatment Plant fire

Kayak and other human-powered boating programs on the NY Waterways are affected by a fire and disabling of the sewage treatment plant underneath the Riverbank State Park on the Hudson River around 145th Street. Sunday July 24 Hallets Cove extended hours 1-6pm

This coming Sunday the tides are favorable for a cool and breezy trip to Hallets Cove from Anabel Basin in the late morning, and back to Anabel in the early evening. Have you come out to pitch in or enjoy this signature program of the LICCB this 2011 season?  Hallets Cove is a pleasant part of Socrates Sculpture Park.  It's located just north of the park along the Vernon Boulevard near Broadway on the western Queens waterfront.
