Thank you Volunteers!
We ended the month of May with some terrific kayaking last weekend! It started with Friday night Surprise Manhattan Henge paddle. Following was a sunny Saturday for LICCB’s our first Anable Basin public walkup kayaking next to the LIC Flea and Food. We welcomed lots of first-timers, veteran kayakers, toddlers, teens, plus even a few dogs to the pleasures of being on the water. Mini-trips just outside the basin gave LIC paddlers a taste of the East River guided by our on-water volunteer squad. Shortly after 6p, river trip goers enjoyed unique views of Manhattan Henge–when the setting sun lines up with Manhattan’s crosstown streets. There was wind and some clouds yet everyone had a great time!
Sunday, LICCB offered an early morning circumnavigation of Roosevelt Island. The weather was clear and sunny for the paddle around one of our favorite river sights. What a great way to enjoy the island’s special features, from FDR Four Freedoms Park to the historic lighthouse.

How to kayak happy
As the weather warms, here are tips to make your trips with the boathouse more pleasant. Bring a water bottle or two. Staying hydrated improves your stamina. Other non-alcoholic beverages are also helpful. Carry a snack with you for longer trips. Bring a hat, sunglasses, sunblock or other protection from the sun.

Volunteer Tips

Welcome to our weekly volunteer segment. Each week, advice or other information useful to volunteers will be posted here in the newsletter.
New volunteers can look to the volunteers in pink tees to know what to do or how to do it. Observe, ask questions. Finding out the leader of the day is a good idea. Don’t be afraid to ask “How can I help?” If you need relief, let someone know so you can take a break. Once you’re ready to leave – remember to sign the Volunteer sheet at the waiver table.
